CITY BALCONY.
ALDGATE, LONDON
This 10‑metre-long by only 1.6‑metre-wide balcony overlooking London had been underused. The clients wanted to transform it into a comfortable, inviting outdoor living space but had struggled with furniture and plants due to the strong winds and intense afternoon sun on the 10th floor. The existing lounge chairs were uncomfortable and the palette was dominated by black and grey.
I specified bespoke warm‑beige planters to maximise planting within the narrow footprint and to introduce a softer, more cohesive base. Drought & wind‑tolerant planting was selected to withstand the site conditions while providing year‑round interest. Pink boucle soft furnishings add warmth, tactility and flexibility, creating a more welcoming seating area. The curves break up the straight lines and add visual interest. Rather than replacing the dining set, we refurbished and powder‑coated it to extend its life and reduce waste; a bold oxide red finish now defines the dining zone.
The project encompassed design development, furniture sourcing, planting design and on‑site installation, resulting in a functional, stylish balcony optimised for the challenging microclimate.
